18th Century Italian Giltwood Corbels, Baroque Rococo Ecclesiastical Decor
Centuries of age and craftsmanship remain visible in this pair of 18th-century Italian giltwood corbels, likely created as ecclesiastical decor in the flowing Baroque and Rococo tradition. Deeply carved scrolls, architectural curves and beautifully aged gilding give each piece the unmistakable presence of an object that has survived within a historic interior.
Likely originating from an ecclesiastical or devotional setting, the pair may once have belonged to a church, monastery, cloister or private chapel. Particularly beautiful are the remnants of original deep red velvet covering the upper platforms. The velvet suggests that objects were once placed and displayed upon these small supports, although their precise original purpose is no longer known.
The hand-carved wood retains a wonderfully rich historic surface, where surviving gilding sits alongside exposed timber, aged ground and deeper patination within the carving. Old worm holes, natural age-related marks and the irregularities of hand-worked timber remain clearly visible, adding to the extraordinary character of the pair.
Today, these antique Italian corbels offer numerous possibilities for display. Mounted individually or as a pair, their 10 × 10 cm platforms could support a small sculpture, devotional object, ceramic vessel or another treasured piece. Equally, the sculptural Baroque and Rococo forms and beautifully aged gilding allow them to be displayed simply as architectural objects in their own right, whether on a wall, in an entrance, living room or alongside a collection of historic pieces.
