Antique Congo KONDA Byongi Ceremonial Blade - Forged Iron Ethnographic Art Object
An exceptional antique KONDA Byongi ceremonial blade originating from the Congo region of Central Africa, dating to the late 19th to early 20th century (circa 1880–1920). Hand-forged with a richly aged metal surface and mounted on its original carved wooden handle, this striking ethnographic art object reflects the sculptural mastery of Konda (Mongo) blacksmithing traditions.
Among the Konda people of the Congo region, these sculptural ceremonial blades served as powerful symbols of prestige and status, valued for their visual presence and craftsmanship. Their bold crescent form gives them a strong architectural presence, making them equally compelling as collector pieces or interior statement objects.
This example comes from a historic Belgian monastery/cloister collection assembled during the active missionary period in Central Africa. A small display hole was added historically by the monastery for wall presentation.
The metal surface shows beautiful tonal variation throughout, with deep oxidized areas contrasting against warm bronze-gold undertones and hand-worked punched decoration, all contributing to the object’s remarkable aged character and visual depth.
A rare and visually striking antique ethnographic object with strong sculptural presence.
