Art Deco Calacatta Viola Marble Double Inkwell, Large Italian Desk Set, 1920s

Step into the luxury of the Art Deco era with this exceptional Calacatta Viola marble double inkwell, dating to circa 1920s. Created with the scale, materials and refinement of a truly impressive writing desk set, it measures 35 cm in length and weighs approximately 3.5 kg.

Two square marble inkwells rise symmetrically from the shaped base, each with its individually hinged marble lid. Both glass ink inserts remain present inside. Three geometric pen rests are arranged across the marble base, complemented by green patinated metal details and brass fittings.

The Calacatta Viola marble is exceptional, with a creamy white ground moving through soft blush tones and dramatic violet, burgundy and deep charcoal veining. Equally impressive is the design of the piece as a whole: its strong symmetry, architectural proportions, geometric forms and combination of marble, brass and green patinated metal are unmistakably Art Deco.

Created for a desk of some importance, this large Art Deco inkwell still has tremendous presence today. It can be used as a true inkwell, or repurposed for modern desk essentials while retaining its original pen rests. Beyond the desk, its sculptural form makes it a wonderful decorative piece for an entrance hall, living room, console or an Art Deco-inspired interior — a reminder of an era when even practical objects were made with extraordinary attention to material and design.
