An exceptional West African bronze figure from the Benin tradition, representing a messenger figure known as Ewua. Such figures are associated with court life and are recognised by their distinctive attributes, including the tall, pointed headgear and the staff, symbolising status and function.

Cast using the traditional lost-wax (cire perdue) technique, this piece reflects a long-standing metalworking tradition originating from the historic Kingdom of Benin, in present-day Nigeria. The figure shows a strong, upright presence with stylised proportions characteristic of this sculptural language.

The surface displays a rich, naturally developed patina with layered tones of warm bronze, darker areas, and subtle green oxidation. Areas of wear reveal the depth of the metal, while the overall surface retains a tactile, time-worn quality. Traces of earlier surface treatment may still be visible, adding further character to the piece.

This is a striking sculptural object that immediately draws attention and invites conversation. It works beautifully in curated interiors, particularly in spaces that combine natural materials, stone, and collected elements, where its form and surface create contrast and focus.

Please note: this listing is for one figure only, as described. Some photos show both figures together for display purposes. The second figure shown is available separately in another listing.

Condition: Good vintage condition with wear consistent with age and use.
