Vintage Guzzini Tortoiseshell Lucite & Brass Serving Tray – Large, Italian Modernist Design

Iconic Italian design takes centre stage in this large vintage Guzzini serving tray, an exceptional modernist piece in tortoiseshell Lucite and brass. Its dramatic sculptural form and extraordinary depth of colour make it a particularly striking example of Guzzini’s glamorous design language.

The faux-tortoiseshell Lucite has a natural translucency, moving from deep chocolate brown and near-black to glowing amber and fiery orange as light passes through the material. Its swirling patterns appear suspended within the Lucite, becoming particularly vivid in stronger light and changing in intensity with the viewing angle, giving every part of the tray its own individual character.

The substantial rectangular body rises into a smoothly moulded rim, sweeping inward along the shorter sides before meeting two broad crescent-shaped brass sections. The fluid, almost aerodynamic silhouette and extensive use of moulded Lucite place the design firmly within the Italian Space Age movement of the late 1960s and 1970s, while the warm faux-tortoiseshell pattern and polished brass bring a distinctly luxurious, almost Hollywood Regency character to the futuristic form.

Produced by Guzzini in Italy, the design is documented in several sizes. Measuring approximately 49 cm across, this example corresponds to the large version, giving it considerable presence as both a functional serving piece and a collectible design object.

Beautiful on a bar cart, coffee table, large ottoman or sideboard, it can be used for serving or simply displayed in its own right.
