Vintage Malachite Chess Set – Hand-Carved Congolese Stone, Italian 1960s
Emerald green, hypnotic banding and the unmistakable beauty of natural stone give this vintage malachite chess set an extraordinary presence. Created in Italy during the 1960s from richly figured Congolese malachite and white onyx, the board and its 32 individually hand-carved pieces transform a traditional game into a remarkable object of mid-century design.
Every chess piece has been individually worked by hand, leaving subtle variations in form and proportion that give the set its distinctive character. The malachite pieces reveal dramatic natural markings, from sweeping emerald and forest-green bands to the concentric “eyes” particularly associated with fine Congolese malachite. The contrasting white onyx pieces display soft cream and ivory banding, providing a beautiful counterpoint to the intensely patterned green stone.
The board is equally expressive, composed from individual sections of malachite and white onyx and surrounded by a broad border of richly patterned malachite. No two areas are alike: tight banding, broad waves and circular mineral formations move across the polished surface, allowing the natural stone itself to become part of the design.
Malachite enjoyed renewed international fascination during the mid-20th century, when its intense colour and extraordinary natural patterning made it a sought-after material for luxury decorative objects. The chess set belongs beautifully to this period, when precious and semi-precious stones moved beyond traditional ornament into striking objects for the modern interior.
Complete with all 32 pieces, it has a wonderful sculptural quality when arranged for play. Equally compelling left on display, the chess set makes a distinctive centrepiece on a coffee table, games table or console, bringing the richness of natural stone and the glamour of 1960s design into a contemporary interior.
