Made more than a century ago, this antique Italian cooking vessel is a rare survivor of the traditional rural kitchens of Apulia, Southern Italy. The large terracotta pignata was created as a working household object rather than for decoration, and its long history of use has given it the extraordinary character and richly aged surface it carries today.

Hand-thrown from coarse local red earthenware, the vessel has a broad rounded body, a thick rolled rim and an exceptionally substantial single strap handle, deeply ridged along its length. Around the upper body, freely applied decoration in warm yellow and green brings a wonderful contrast to the rich earthy tones of the terracotta.

Pignate such as this belonged to the everyday cooking traditions of Southern Italy, where earthenware vessels were used around the hearth for the long, slow preparation of simple regional foods — the kind of cooking that became known as cucina povera. Unlike refined ceramics intended for the table or display, these were practical household objects, made to withstand repeated use close to the fire.

That history is still beautifully visible today. The surface has developed an extraordinary depth of colour, with traces of old cooking and fire use, worn glaze and softened decoration sitting naturally alongside the warm exposed terracotta. The interior, rough underside and strongly modelled handle further reveal the handmade, utilitarian character of the piece.

Its survival today is remarkable. Utilitarian vessels such as this were made to be used, and over generations many were broken, discarded or simply disappeared as traditional hearth cooking gave way to modern kitchens. More than a century later, this pignata gives testament as both a piece of Apulian domestic history and a wonderfully sculptural object. Its generous proportions, irregular surface and earthy palette make it a striking standalone piece for a rustic Mediterranean, primitive, Wabi-Sabi or contemporary interior.

Please let me know if you would like me to treat the vessel with a museum-grade microcrystalline wax before shipping, helping to stabilise and protect its aged surface while preserving its original character.
